Music of Strangers


Music of Strangers is an oratorio that mixes traditional and contemporary Roma and Scottish music and dance. Exploring the journey of the Eastern Slovakian Roma people throughout the centuries leading up to the present day Music of Strangers reflects their experiences and the communities in which they share their new home in Govanhill, Glasgow as each attempts to confront the strangeness of the other.

Music of Strangers was first performed in October 2012 in Victoria Halls, Govanhill and the Tron Theatre, Glasgow. Then toured to schools, community and music venues in the Govanhill area of Glasgow in June 2013. The cast were made up of professional and non-professional performers and included Eastern Slovakian Roma and Non-Roma people from Slovakia, Czech Republic, Poland and Scotland.
